Where the software engineering jobs actually are

More than half our index is one field. That has consequences for how you search.

Of about 4,400 matched roles across eighteen fields in our index, software engineering accounted for roughly 1,240 and sales for another 980. Everything else shared what was left.

Why the skew exists

The public job data sources that are safe to use are the job board endpoints published by applicant tracking systems, and those systems are disproportionately used by technology companies. It is a property of the supply, not of the economy.

What it means if you are an engineer

Volume is not your problem. Signal is. With that much supply, the differentiator is narrowing hard: a specific stack, a specific domain, a specific company size. Applying broadly in a large market is how good candidates disappear.

What it means if you are not

General technology job boards will under serve you, and you will conclude the market is empty when it is simply elsewhere. Industry specific boards, professional bodies and direct company careers pages matter far more outside technology.

A practical consequence

If a tool shows you very few roles in your field, ask where it gets its data before concluding anything about the market. Coverage varies enormously by profession and almost nobody publishes theirs.
