What to say when a remote employer asks your salary expectation

The question is asked early, and the wrong answer closes the range before it opens.

Cross border remote hiring makes the salary question harder, because there are two legitimate anchors and the employer would prefer the lower one.

The two anchors

Location based pay benchmarks you against the cost of employing someone where you live. Role based pay benchmarks you against the value of the work. Most companies use location based pay and describe it as fairness. Some use a single global band and advertise it, because it is a recruiting advantage.

Find out which before you answer

Do you benchmark compensation by location or globally? It is a neutral question, it is reasonable to ask in a first call, and the answer changes what number you should give.

Give a range and a reason

A bare number is a negotiating position. A range with a rationale is information. Something like: based on the scope you have described and what similar roles pay in this market, I would be looking in this range, and I am flexible on structure.

Do not answer first if you can avoid it

What range has been budgeted for this role is a fair question and usually gets an answer. Many jurisdictions now require the range to be published anyway.

Remember what else is negotiable

Where salary is fixed by band, equipment budget, learning budget, extra leave, notice period, working pattern and review timing often are not. Those are worth real money and are frequently conceded without much resistance.
