The remote jobs that do not exist

We scanned 22,182 live postings across thirteen sources. Here is how much of the remote market is real, by field.

Remote work is discussed as though it is evenly available. It is not. It is concentrated in a small number of fields, and in the rest it barely exists.

What we measured

On 30 September 2026 our crawler pulled 22,182 live job postings from thirteen public sources. We then asked a narrow question of three professions: how many postings actually state remote working.

The part that matters more than the rate

Almost none of those remote roles were open to someone outside the employer's country. Of the twenty one remote engineering roles, nearly all were remote within Finland, Greece, Bulgaria, Poland, Portugal, India, Brazil, Canada or the UK. Remote on a job posting usually means remote inside one jurisdiction.

For architecture the four remote roles were all United States practices offering partial remote to staff who can reach a studio.

Why it is like this

Hiring is tied to payroll, tax and employment law, all of which are national. On top of that, architecture is tied to building codes, site attendance and local registration, which is why it is the worst of the three.

What to do with this

Search for the structure, not the word. The phrases that actually predict eligibility are employer of record, independent contractor, work from anywhere and hire globally. A posting that says remote and names one city is telling you about desk policy, not about who it will hire.
