What a rejection actually tells you
Usually much less than it feels like, and occasionally something worth acting on.
Rejections arrive with almost no information, and the mind supplies a story to fill the gap. The story is usually wrong and usually unkind.
That someone else was a closer fit, that the role was filled internally, that the budget moved, that the team reorganised, or that you were fourth out of three hundred. None of those are about your worth and none of them are actionable.
The ones that carry signal
- Rejected after a technical stage with specific feedback. That is real and worth acting on.
- Rejected at the same stage repeatedly across different companies. That is a pattern, and it names the thing to work on.
- Rejected immediately, repeatedly, on eligibility. That is a targeting problem, not an ability problem.
Ask, briefly
One short message asking for the single biggest reason gets a reply perhaps one time in five. Those replies are worth more than any amount of speculation.
Keep it bounded
Give each rejection ten minutes: record it, extract anything useful, close it. The follow up rule matters here too. One chase, then stop. Searching for a job is long enough without carrying every no forward.
