Questions worth asking at the end of an interview
Most candidate questions are filler. These produce information you can act on.
The questions you ask are read as a signal of how you think, and they are also your only chance to find out whether you want the job.
Questions that produce real information
- What does the first ninety days look like, and what would success be at the end of it?
- What is the hardest part of this job that is not in the posting?
- Who was in this role before, and where are they now?
- How are decisions made when the team disagrees? Ask for a recent example.
- What is on the roadmap that you are worried about?
For remote roles specifically
- How many of the team are remote, and how many of the last promotions went to them?
- Where would I find a decision from last month that I was not part of?
- What are the core hours, and in whose timezone?
Questions to skip
Anything answerable from the website. Anything that sounds like a test you set them. And what is the company culture like, which invites a rehearsed answer that tells you nothing.
Listen to how they answer
Hesitation on the question about the previous person in the role is informative. So is an inability to name anything hard about the job. You are assessing them at the same time, and this is the part where you get to.
