Getting referrals without being a networker

Referrals convert far better than applications. You do not have to be extroverted to get one.

A referred application is read. An unreferred one competes with three hundred others. That gap is the single largest lever in a job search and most people leave it alone because networking sounds like small talk at events.

You already know enough people

Former colleagues, classmates, people you worked with at clients and suppliers. The list is longer than it feels. You are not asking any of them for a job. You are asking a specific, small question.

The message that works

Short, specific, easy to say no to. Name the company and role, say why you are a plausible fit in one line, and ask whether they would be comfortable referring you or pointing you at the right person. Attach the CV so they do not have to ask.

The failure mode is vagueness. Let me know if you hear of anything puts all the work on them and gets nothing done.

Cold is fine too

Messaging someone who does the job you want, at the company you want, and asking two specific questions about the work has a surprisingly good response rate. Do not ask for a referral in the first message. Ask about the job.

Give it away first, if you can

Answering questions publicly in your field, writing about your work, or helping someone you have no reason to help builds the kind of relationship where a referral is easy to ask for later. This is slow, and it compounds.
