When your LinkedIn and your CV disagree
Recruiters check both. Mismatches cost more than either document individually.
Almost every recruiter who reads your CV will open your LinkedIn profile within a minute. The two documents are read together, which makes any disagreement between them expensive.
What gets noticed
- Different start or end dates for the same role.
- A job title on one and a grander version on the other.
- A company on your CV that is missing from LinkedIn entirely.
- Founded dates for your own business that do not match.
Pick one source of truth
Decide which document is authoritative, correct the other to match, and keep a short note of the settled facts so future edits do not reintroduce drift. This sounds bureaucratic and takes ten minutes once.
Where they should differ
They should not tell the same story at the same length. LinkedIn is broader and written for people who may not know your industry. Your CV is narrower and written for one role. Different emphasis is fine. Different facts are not.
Update LinkedIn last, not first
Changing your headline the week you start applying is a visible signal to your current employer. If that matters to you, turn off activity broadcasts before you edit.
