How to handle a gap on your CV
Gaps are common and rarely fatal. Hiding them is what causes the problem.
Employment gaps worry candidates far more than they worry employers. What does worry employers is a timeline that does not add up and an answer that sounds rehearsed.
Name it, briefly
A gap with a one line explanation stops being a question. Caring for a family member, relocating, recovering from illness, studying, or looking for the right role after a redundancy are all ordinary. Put the dates and a short label in the same format as your other roles and move on.
Do not use month tricks
Dropping months and showing only years to hide a nine month gap is a well known tactic and it is spotted constantly. It converts a small honest gap into a credibility question, which is a much worse trade.
Show what continued
If you did anything during the gap that touches your field, say so. A course, a certification, freelance work, an open source contribution, a volunteer project. It does not need to be impressive. It needs to show the thread was not cut.
If the gap is current
Being between roles right now is not a weakness and pretending otherwise reads badly. Say what you are looking for and what you have been doing with the time.
