BIM coordinator pays more, and goes remote more often

A career observation from our own index, for architects deciding what to learn.

In our crawl of the Lebanese and Gulf markets, BIM titles appeared more often than architect titles, tended to quote higher salaries, and were the only architecture adjacent roles that appeared remotely with any regularity.

Why the difference exists

Design authorship is tied to a place: codes, approvals, site. Model production and coordination are tied to a file. One of those can be done from anywhere and the other cannot.

The gap is smaller than it looks

An architect who uses Revit daily already has most of it. What is missing is usually Navisworks, clash detection, a federated model workflow, and the BIM execution plan vocabulary. That is weeks of deliberate practice, not years.

Be precise about what you claim

Revit is BIM authoring. Writing BIM modelling in Revit is honest. BIM coordination means running clash detection across a federated model from several disciplines, and claiming it without having done it will be found out in the first technical conversation.

The trade off to consider

Coordination is less creative than design. Some architects find it a relief and some find it a loss. It is worth being honest with yourself about which, because the financial and geographic case is strong enough to be tempting on its own.
